NSW: Girls better all rounders than boys, HSC list shows
SYDNEY, Dec 18 AAP - Girls were better HSC all-rounders than their male counterparts,
according to results released today by New South Wales Education Minister John Aquilina.
The results list includes all students who achieved 90 per cent in at least 11 units.
According to the figures, girls made up 56.5 per cent of the state's 69 all-rounders
- up from 51.3 per cent last year.
The list represented a wide cross-section of the state, including students from country
NSW, the Illawarra, Newcastle and western Sydney.
It also showed that state schools produced more all-rounders than private schools,
with 39 coming from government schools and just 30 from non-government.
Students from James Ruse Agricultural High School in north west Sydney again topped
the HSC all-rounder list with 16 students of the selective school making the list.
Being a selective state school contributed to the school's success as well as supportive
teachers and fellow students, all-rounder Kate Crossley said.
"We are so successful because the teachers really focus on us and lots of us are at
the same level so we work off each other," she said.
Sixty-nine students of the 62,883 HSC entrants were on the all-rounder merit list.
Thirty-nine of them were from state schools and 30 from non-government schools.
Mr Aquilina congratulated the students and their families.
"I am particularly proud and pleased that in the all-rounders list this year we have
students from all parts of NSW," he said.
"They deserve our recognition and wholehearted congratulations."
