Several area residents have been victimized recently by anInternet scam, according to Butler Township police.
People targeted by the "Yahoo Email Verification Scam," many ofwhom are Yahoo email users, receive an email instructing them toverify their user name and password within a certain number of days,or their account will be terminated, police said.
The victim is provided a link, which is actually connected to thescammer's website, where they are tricked into entering personallogin and password information.
Once the victim provides their information, their account is usedto send messages to their contacts.
In many cases, police said, an email is sent to the victim'scontacts reporting that they were robbed of all of their money in aforeign country and requesting that money be wired to them.
Their contacts may also be sent the same phishing emailrequesting their information, which is how social engineering scamsare passed on.
Anyone who has experienced such a scam is advised to immediatelychange their password and security questions.
Butler Township police said people should not use their emailhyperlinks to log into their accounts, and to always enter the webpage from the browser and make sure the site is secure.
