1st lady says radiation is helping eyes

Barbara Bush said today that her eyes are showing improvementfor the first time after radiation treatment for irritation resultingfrom Graves disease.

"Last week was the first week without seeing double," she toldreporters.

"I think the radiation worked. That's very good news," Mrs.Bush said. However, she said she had not been evaluated recently byher medical specialists.

She underwent 10 days of radiation treatment in January, anddoctors said it would take several weeks to determine if theradiation had worked.

She made the comments after surprising tourists on the firstfloor of the White House by conducting a brief ceremony to receivenew editions of The Presidents of the United States and The FirstLadies from the White House Historical Association president.

White House staffers gathered about 200 tourists in the mainfoyer of the White House to watch Mrs. Bush formally accept the booksand sign several copies for delighted recipients among the tourists.

She joked that the family dog, Millie, lurking shyly in thebackground, "doesn't like tourists."
