Fed: Body image weighs down female athletes - Olympic medallist

By Angela Erini

CANBERRA, Feb 18 AAP - Triple Olympic gold medallist Petria Thomas knows what it's
like to be called fat.

The champion swimmer says some coaches are putting too much pressure on female athletes
to lose weight.

Thomas revealed today she was plagued by comments about her weight throughout her career
but she was realistic about her body shape.

She knew she would never have a waif-like figure, no matter what people said, so she
learned to live with the comments.

But Thomas is worried about the future of young athletes who may not be able to brush
off such remarks.

Coaches guilty of the practice should be better educated, otherwise there would be
devastating repercussions for young female athletes.

"Young girls are very impressionable, and if they get people telling them they are
fat all the time, that may cause problems into the future and you don't want to see that,"

Thomas said.

"There were definitely times where I was told to lose weight, or I was too fat, so
it can become an issue.

"I'm fairly sensitive to people saying those things about me, but obviously I didn't
take it too much to heart.

The Olympian's comments came after Ian Thorpe's coach, Tracey Menzies told the ABC's
Australian Story that she was hassled about her weight, which put her health at risk.

Excessive dieting and overtraining as an 18-year-old swimmer led Menzies to a poolside
collapse and more than a decade of pain.

Thomas said sport was not worth risking one's wellbeing.

"Sport is not worth compromising your health throughout your life, that should be first
and foremost for everybody," Thomas said.

"Unfortunately, people get a bit obsessed with sport at times and take it a bit too
far and it can lead to problems.

"If you get to the stage where you're dangerously underweight, or anorexic, then it's
going to cause health problems and you hope that they're not lifelong ones."

Thomas said she assumed it was not just female swimming competitors who were hassled
about their weight and the much-needed education program should be adopted for every sport.

"I hope that there is some sort of education process put into place in the future,
not only for swimming, but for all sports.

"Females, when they get older, certainly don't need anyone to tell them when they're
a little bit heavy - they know themselves.

"It's up to them to do something about it, not the coaches.

"Not all coaches are bad, there is some though unfortunately, and something needs to
be done about it."

FED:Alcoholic energy drinks given thumbs down

CANBERRA, April 12 AAP - Three out of every four Australians believe mixing alcohol
with energy drinks isn't a good idea, and 59 per cent support a ban on buying pre-mixed
versions.

The Alcohol Education and Rehabilitation Foundation says its survey results proves
the need for greater scrutiny on the issue.

The foundation is funding a three-month independent study, where it will survey drinkers
at Melbourne pubs, clubs and nightspots as well as employees.

Chief executive Michael Thorn said there were numerous black marks against alcoholic
energy drinks, such as Jagerbombs.

They mask the feeling of intoxication, which leads to people drinking more and the
increased risk of violence.

Both alcohol and the high-caffeine energy drinks are also diuretics, which could cause
dehydration on a long night out.

"What the latest findings show is that a majority of Australians are seriously concerned
about the potential dangers of alcoholic energy drinks," he said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The community is clearly identifying this as an issue and in Western Australia, authorities
are taking an active and preventative approach to combating alcohol-related harms."

WA has banned the sale of drinks mixing alcohol and energy drinks across inner-Perth
after midnight, in what the industry says is an Australian first.

The foundation's online survey took in the responses of more than 1000 people of drinking
age across the country, with 75 per cent giving alcoholic energy drinks the thumbs-down.

Fifty-nine per cent said they supported a ban on pre-mix sales.

Key concerns with beverages such as Jagerbombs was that they increased the risk of
heart palpitations, while 53 per cent said it was too easy not to feel drunk.

The $20,000 study is due to be completed by August.

Fed: No guarantees for ABC centre staff: union

SYDNEY, April 15 AAP - The childcare union has welcomed news that 210 threatened ABC
Learning childcare centres will remain open, but is worried staff have not been guaranteed
their jobs.

The ABC group went into receivership last November with debts of more than $1.5 billion.

More than 700 centres deemed viable are set to be sold off and remain in business,
but the remaining 241 were regarded as non-viable.

Court-appointed receiver PPB on Wednesday said operators had been found for 210 of
the remaining centres.

Keeping the centres open would save 80 per cent of jobs at the 241 centres, but operators
could not be found for 19 centres and they would close, PPB said.

Louise Tarrant, head of the LHMU which represents childcare workers, said the news
was a great turnaround from November when it was feared all 241 centres would close.

However, she said the announcement gave no guarantees workers at the 241 centres would
keep their jobs.

"The concern we have is that workers still do not know definitely if they have a job,"

Ms Tarrant told reporters in Sydney.

"Those in the 19 centres that are closing, they are looking at losing their existing
jobs ... and for those people in those centres that are being sold, the new operators
haven't given blanket guarantees of ongoing employment.

"We hoped today was going to be a final decision for everyone so parents and workers
would know definitely where they stand."

The WiMAX catalyst

New Straits Times

The WiMAX catalyst

Edition: New Sunday Times
Section: Main Section

NATIONAL development is of overwhelming importance to Malaysia, and to the rest of the developing world. Everything we do - whether it is building new industries, instituting new policies, making a change to the status quo - is viewed through the lens of national development. And in an emerging country like Malaysia it is even more important that we do so.

Over the past few decades, our nation has built robust high-tech infrastructure to support industries that use the latest technologies. Our finest minds contribute toward the development of the newest innovations in manufacturing and information technology. However, the wealth that all this growth is not shared equally among all Malaysians.
Those who live in cities take for granted the facilities and the opportunities that are available. But just a few hours drive out of Kuala Lumpur and you will find that these privileges are not universal to all Malaysians. The divide between the haves and the have-nots has remained closed and we are duty bound to bridge this gap.

One of the means of achieving a more equitable sharing of Malaysia's wealth among its people is to provide broadband Internet access to all locations in the country

According to the CIA World Factbook, it states that with every 10 per cent increase in mobile penetration equates to x amount of GDP (gross domestic product), every 10 per cent Internet penetration equates to 125 per cent more compared to the GDP contribution of mobile penetration and every 10 per cent of broadband penetration equates to 625 per cent increase in GDP compared with the GDP contributed by mobile penetration.

Our government has been a keen supporter of Internet technologies and has invested heavily in building core infrastructure such as the Multimedia Super Corridor and has liberalised the telecommunications market to encourage business to take the lead in delivering Internet access to the public.

The most recent communications technology being deployed in Malaysia is WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) and there is great expectation that this will help us reach our goal of achieving 50 per cent household broadband Internet penetration by 2010.

What will WiMAX achieve?

Delivering broadband Internet access throughout Malaysia has been a challenge because of several factors. Our population is spread out all over the land and laying fibre-optic cable to all these locations is prohibitively expensive. Wireless technologies have, until recently, not had the necessary range or lacked the bandwidth to make them a viable solution.

WiMAX has been developed from the very start with the objective to deliver broadband Internet access at great range. WiMAX can deliver up to 40Mbps bandwidth at a range between three and 10km. And because the core technologies behind WiMAX are not controlled by a single company - no company owns more than 10 per cent of the patents for technology used in WiMAX - the cost of WiMAX devices has been steadily falling as it gains worldwide popularity.

Using WiMAX, Malaysia will take a significant step toward achieving ubiquitous broadband Internet access. The impact this will have on our lives cannot be understated.

For business

In cities throughout Malaysia, broadband Internet access is a must for all businesses. You have to have phones, computers and broadband access to the Internet. You cannot do business if you cannot send and receive emails and attachments. And instant messaging and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) keep down the cost of long distance communications.

Yet there are thousands of offices in Malaysia that do not enjoy this convenience; that struggle with dial-up Internet access and bear the burden of expensive communications. Internet access through WiMAX will catapult these businesses into a whole new arena and open opportunities for them that were previously inaccessible. Through WiMAX an office in a small town will compete on a level playing field with an office in Kuala Lumpur

But it is not only offices that will benefit from WiMAX. This ubiquitous wireless broadband Internet access will give many Malaysians the option to choose to telecommute - to work from home or another location.

Just consider how much this can affect our national productivity. Telecommuting allows people, who otherwise might not work, to have professional jobs; this could be parents who want to stay at home with their children or the handicapped or infirm who cannot easily travel. These individuals can now improve their lives and contribute toward improving Malaysia.

WiMAX will also benefit small businesses. With access to the Internet and through e-commerce, every small business will have immediate access to the global marketplace.

For health

The common perception is that broadband Internet access will mean that patients in every town and village can be remotely examined and diagnosed by medical specialists in large cities.

Frankly, I think that situation will only be an exception and never the norm. Doctors and patients value human contact too much to be content with remote consultation although this may be used as a first stage procedure to spare patients needless trips to the hospital. The real benefits of broadband Internet access toward our national health will be in two other areas.

The first is education. As more Malaysians are given the means to find out and be correctly informed about how to preserve their health and wellbeing, we will start to live healthier lives.

The second will be an unseen benefit. It will be in logistics and analytics. With easy broadband access to the Internet, more of our hospitals and clinics can be brought online. Patient records can be stored online and accessed by doctors when the patient is away from home. The inventory of medicine at clinics and hospitals can be monitored from a central distribution node and replenishments sent before stocks run out so that patients can receive effective and timely treatment. And when an outbreak of illness occurs, analysis of the data being sent through the Internet from several locations will allow doctors to recognise the outbreak earlier and institute containment and begin treatment sooner.

For entertainment

All of us watch television and movies, we listen to music and we read articles, and we do many of these activities through the Internet. But because of the Internet we also create, share and consume content created by the public. We watch YouTube, we listen to podcasts and we read blogs. The Internet is an unprecedented platform for entertainment and self-expression.

As we achieve ubiquitous broadband Internet access many more interesting personalities will emerge from our ranks to share their thoughts and their experiences with us.

For education

Nothing will ever exceed the benefits to our nation from ubiquitous Internet access than the impact it will have on education.

Our universities all have broadband Internet access and most of our students have adequate access to computers. Broadband Internet access through WiMAX will allow these students to be more productive and give them more freedom.

It is the primary and secondary school children who will truly feel their lives transformed by WiMAX. Programmes like One Laptop Per Child (www.laptop.org) are working to deliver useful and affordable computers to children. And websites like the Internet Public Library (www.ipl.org) and Project Bartleby (www.bartleby.com) give free access to reference materials, literature and non- fictional classics.

The wider education of our children will mean that tomorrow's Malaysian professionals will have a greater breath of interest, skills and knowledge to establish new industries and create new innovations.

For society

Everyone knows the impact the Internet had on our last general election. But do a search online and you will find that as significant as that was, it is not the most significant social impact the Internet has had on Malaysia.

All over our country, communities are emerging online. Some are clubs with people who share a common interest and these have been around for a while, but others are of people who live in the same neighbourhood. These are the emerging communities of significance. They share concerns about safety, environment, and schools for their children among others things. And through the Internet these people are able to organise and collaborate to make their neighbourhoods better places to live.

Raising the quality of life for all Malaysians is the highest goal of national development. WiMAX will undoubtedly achieve this but it is only the beginning of the promise of things to come.

Microsoft billionaire Bill Gates once said, "If you give people tools, (and they use) their natural ability and their curiosity, they will develop things in ways that will surprise you very much beyond what you might have expected."

WiMAX will be putting mankind's greatest tool, the Internet, into the hands of all Malaysians.

* Michael Lai, with over 20 years of experience in the information and communications technology industry, is the chief executive officer of Packet One (P1), Malaysia's first WiMAX broadband service provider. P1, along with the Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, has successfully launched the iconic Wireless@KL which uses both WiMAX and WiFi technologies to transform Kuala Lumpur into a world-class wireless city

Qld: Most masks not effective against air pollution: expert

By Gabrielle Dunlevy

BRISBANE, Aug 6 AAP - Athletes and visitors at the Beijing Olympics are doing themselves
no favours by wearing disposable masks, a Queensland expert in population health says.

Griffith University's Dr David Bromwich said people were misguided if they believed
disposable face masks, such as those sold by hardware shops, would protect them from the
city's air pollution.

Dr Bromwich said such masks rarely sealed properly around the face, and did not stop
gases like sulphur dioxide or nitrogen dioxide.

People wearing surgical masks could be under an even greater delusion, he said.

"Surgical masks are designed to protect patients, rather than the wearer," Dr Bromwich told AAP.

"We presume it works the other way around to protect the wearer, and that's not so at all."

He said ill-fitting masks were also a risk.

"If you're wearing a mask and it doesn't fit well you might get an increased restriction
to (air) flow ... it would be harder to breathe," he said.

Dr Bromwich said countries such as the US had been involved in intense research and
development worth millions of dollars to design improved masks, using nanomaterials for
filter layers.

But his advice for the average Beijing visitor?

"Pray for rain," Dr Bromwich said.

Mr Macdonald said it was highly likely the current restrictions would last at least
two weeks and the effect would be substantial as the racing industry approached its high
season.

"There's no doubt it's a disaster for the horse industry at this point in time," Mr
Macdonald said.

"It comes on the cusp on their spring carnival ... it's a great blow to them."

Also under threat are horses under the command of NSW Police Force which are stabled
near Centennial Park.

The exclusion zone around the areas of infection have been expanded to a 10km radius,
the minister said.

With the APEC summit in Sydney just one week away it is unknown if mounted police will
be available to fend off expected large-scale protests.

Specific permits to release the horses for duty could be issued if there was no risk
of spreading EI.

"The aim would be to see that that will be optional through APEC, but it will be subject
to the same sort of restrictions and discussions that we have to go through in relation
to this outbreak across the state," Mr Macdonald said.

More than 200 department personnel have been directed to horse facilities across NSW
to continue issuing tests of areas suspected of possible infection.

Mr Macdonald and Dr Christie are meeting with industry representatives at Royal Randwick
to further discuss the response to the EI outbreak.

Vic: Collingwood players fined $5,000 over weekend brawl

By Xavier La Canna and Jamie Duncan

MELBOURNE, Aug 2 AAP - Two Collingwood AFL players involved in a weekend brawl outside
a Melbourne nightclub have each been fined $5,000 and could be sacked from the club.

The Collingwood Football Club today said players Chris Tarrant and Ben Johnson were
involved in an incident early on Sunday morning and were assisting a police investigation.

Officers are investigating the alleged assault of a 28-year-old Bayswater North man
outside a nightclub at Station Pier, Port Melbourne, about 3.30am (AEST) on Sunday.

Police said the 28-year-old was leaving a venue at Station Pier with four other men
when they saw a brawl in progress.

He saw a man kicking another man, who was on the ground, police said, but when he tried
to separate the pair, the 28-year-old was allegedly punched from behind and knocked unconscious.

The two footballers suffered cuts and bruises but it is not known what part they played
in the brawl.

Collingwood chief Greg Swann told reporters that Tarrant and Johnson would be fined
the maximum $5,000 under the AFL players' code of conduct.

"There is certainly a level of anger (in the club), different people have different
levels, but these two players will, as I said, be fined and the match committee will determine
whether they play or not this week," Mr Swann said.

"There are two sides to the story so the police being the arbiter will determine what
actually has occurred.

"We have spoken to our major sponsors this morning about what's happened. It is fair
to say it is embarrassing. We don't like to do it."

Asked if the pair could be sacked for their involvement in the incident, Mr Swann said:
"We haven't ruled anything out.

"The investigation will take its course and then when that happens we will determine
what we do with the players.

"We don't expect all of our players to be monks. There is a group, I am sure there
is at every club who, you know, enjoy getting out and being a bit more social than others.

So we just have to make sure that that is done within the confines of probably common
sense," Mr Swann said.

He said club president Eddie McGuire had been informed of the incident and was also unhappy.

A $300 million desalination plant will be built in South Australia to supply seawater
to the soon-to-be expanded BHP Billiton uranium and copper mine at Roxby Downs.

The Australian newspaper reports the South Australian government is poised to back
construction of a desalination plant near Whyalla to supply the water needed to run the

The paper says the plant will be based near Whyalla in the upper Spencer Gulf .. with
water supplied via a 330km pipeline to Olympic Dam.

The desalination option for Roxby Downs follows pressure from the Labor left and environmentalists
not to allow BHP Billiton to draw an extra 150 megalitres of water a day from the Great

The report comes just days after the New South Wales government scotched plans for

Alibaba Group, Yahoo!, and SoftBank reach agreement on Alipay.(INTERNET)

Alibaba Group, Yahoo!, and SoftBank announced they have reached an agreement in which Alibaba Group will continue to participate in Alipay's future financial performance, including a future IPO or other liquidity event. The agreement is consistent with the two agreed-upon principles established at the outset of the negotiations: structure the inter-company relationship between Alipay and Taobao in order to preserve the value within Taobao and, by extension, withinAlibaba Group; and provide that Alibaba Group is appropriately compensated for the value of Alipay.

The agreement establishes the following:

- The agreement preserves the existing relationship between Taobao and Alipay. Alipay will continue to provide payment-processing services to Alibaba Group and its subsidiaries (including Taobao) on preferential terms.

- Alibaba Group will license to Alipay certain intellectual property and technology and provide certain software technology services to Alipay and its subsidiaries. Alipay will pay to Alibaba Group, prior to a liquidity event, a royalty and software technology services fee, which consists of an expense reimbursement and a 49.9 percent share of the consolidated pre-tax income of Alipay and its subsidiaries.

- Alibaba Group will receive no less than $2 billion and no more than $6 billion in proceeds from an IPO of Alipay or other liquidity event. The exact proceeds to Alibaba Group will be determined by multiplying the total equity value of Alipay by 37.5 percent, subject to the foregoing floor and ceiling amounts.

"Over the last few months, we have worked cooperatively with our partners at Yahoo! and SoftBank to reach an agreement that serves the interests of all parties," said Jack Ma, Alibaba Group chairman and CEO. "This agreement is good for Alibaba Group and its stakeholders, including customers, employees and shareholders. Most importantly, Alipay was able to secure the license it needed to continue operating."

"This is a good outcome for Yahoo! and for our shareholders, as well as all the parties to this agreement," said Carol Bartz, Yahoo! CEO. "As a result of this constructive process, we have an agreement that preserves the value of Taobao, provides for profit sharing at Alipay, and creates a structure to allow Alibaba Group to participate if Alipay's value is realized in an IPO or other liquidity event. Alibaba Group and its management team have an impressive track record of value creation and we look forward to participating in Alibaba Group's -- and Alipay's -- continued success."

"This agreement was in part made possible by the strong long-term relationship and trust that exists between the principals at Alibaba Group, SoftBank and Yahoo!, and also lays the foundation forAlibaba Group to continue its impressive growth under the dynamic leadership of Jack Ma," said Masayoshi Son, SoftBank CEO. "Alibaba Group is a clear leader in the China Internet business, the largest and fastest growing market in the world, and the close relationship with Alipay will allow Alibaba Group to strengthen that leadership position in the years to come."

Alipay provides payment-processing services to Alibaba Group and some affiliates, including Taobao, and to third parties. Taobao is China's largest online retail Web site. Alibaba Group's principal shareholders include Yahoo!, SoftBank, and Jack Ma and Joseph Tsai. In May 2011, Alipay obtained a license to operate in China from the People's Bank of China following the restructuring of Alipay. The license will enable Alipay to continue serving Taobao and its other customers in China.

The agreement is expected to close by the end of 2011 and is subject to certain regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Computer Services Firms Merge, Move Headquarters to St. Petersburg, Fla..

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Oct. 1 -- Two fast-growing Tampa Bay computer services companies said Thursday they are merging and moving their combined headquarters and about 100 jobs to downtown St. Petersburg.

U.S. Technologies Inc. of Tampa and Digital Chainsaw Inc. of Largo said they will combine forces under the attention-getting Digital Chainsaw name and occupy the fifth floor of the SunTrust Bank building at Third Street and First Avenue S.

Digital Chainsaw is a two-year-old company that hosts about 5,000 Web sites for businesses. Founder Gary Allen said the "chainsaw" name grew out of the company's low prices, which start at $9.95 a month.

"We were cutting prices to the bone," he said.

The company also designs Web sites and develops software.

U.S. Technologies, which dates back to 1992, specializes in software development and services and Web-based corporate training.

Both companies are privately held and declined to disclose the terms of the merger.

U.S. Technologies founder Peter Steele said the merged company will be able to provide a comprehensive package of Internet-related services, including electronic commerce and Web-based software applications.

The merged company expects to have $8-million to $10-million in revenue in the coming year and to add about 75 jobs, said Jim Stefan, who heads corporate strategy for Digital Chainsaw. He said the company is hiring Web site designers and developers, programmers and sales representatives.

Company officials said they were attracted to downtown St. Petersburg by the tax breaks available to businesses in the city's Enterprise Zone. Those include sales tax rebates on purchases of business equipment and tax credits for hiring people who live in the zone.

"That's a nice type of business for us to be attracting," said Cindy Margiotta, St. Petersburg's economic development coordinator. She said Digital Chainsaw will be the largest business to move downtown in 1999.

The company plans to keep a sales office in Tampa in addition to offices in Jacksonville, Atlanta and Boulder, Colo.

The World Loves Wi-Fi and WiMAX

By Curt Harler

The technology leaves its mark on security

Wi-Fi and WiMAX are hot buzz words in wireless security technology. Integrators and dealers know the market is in love with mobile and remote access to security systems. For many, the way to provide that access is via Wi-Fi or WiMAX.

Thanks to its popularity in the consumer market, everyone who is technology-savvy knows the term Wi-Fi. Smart integrators and manufacturers are trumpeting their Wi-Fi credentials and promoting it as a way to monitor video systems or check at-home security settings from remote locations.

Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is another hot mobility protocol. It provides fixed and mobile Internet access. It is an IP-based, wireless broadband access technology that provides performance similar to 802.11/Wi-Fi networks with the coverage and quality of service (QOS) of cellular networks. A new, improved WiMAX-2 provides even higher speeds and better data rates.

"The key is higher data rates and the ability to monitor the technology," said Dr. Mohammad Shakouri, vice president of the WiMAX Forum, Beaverton, Ore. "We will see a more integrated, distributed model for these technologies. Both inside and outside the building we will see Wi-Fi, ZigBee, fiber and WiMAX integrated."

WiFi and WiMAX hit their stride

When over 1,000 Americans were asked by Wakefield Research, Washington, D.C., what the best sign is that a new technology item is cutting edge, the two top answers (each with about 29 percent response) were: "It has Wi-Fi" and "It doesn't have wires." The survey, done in December 2010, showed how technology oriented Americans have become. More respondents said they check their e-mail before bed than kiss their spouse/significant others goodnight.

Security companies have sensed the public's affinity with Wi-Fi and wireless devices and many are hopping onboard. The movers and shakers in the business all belong to the Wi-Fi Alliance, Austin, Texas (previously known as the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance), a non-profit organization formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of Wi-Fi (IEEE 802.11) products and to promote Wi-Fi as the global wireless LAN standard across all market segments, including security.

As part of its role, the Wi-Fi Alliance defined a test suite that defines how member products are tested to certify that they are interoperable with other vendor products. When a product successfully passes the test, the company will be granted the Wi-Fi seal of interoperability and may display the Wi-Fi logo on that product and its corresponding collateral material. Consumers are assured that any product bearing the Wi-Fi logo will work with other Wi-Fi products.

Many integrators are Cisco shops, so they are familiar with the basic wireless technology behind the Wi-Fi boom. It plays right into one of the hottest trends in security: allowing the customer to view video.

Wi-Fi will fill a niche in the video market, according to Vince Vittore, principal analyst with Yankee Group, Boston. "It makes perfect sense if you are a provider who wants to reach that fourth or fifth TV without having to drill through walls," he said. "Wi-Fi is a nice complement to what is out there."

"I know Verizon is using Z-Wave in their monitoring package that they launched at CES," said Vittore. He said that seemed to surprise some of the home networking companies he talked to at the show, especially the chip providers who did not expect a major US-based firm to use Z-Wave in a major offering.

Security remains a concern with Wi-Fi. About 17 percent of those responding to the Wakefield Research questions admitted that, in the past year they had tried to get on a Wi-Fi network that was not theirs--such as a neighbor's--in an attempt to save money.

Still, the technology is popular. "There are a lot of Wi-Fi cameras available and some Wi-Fi set-top boxes that are selling into the market," Vittore said. Among several products Wi-Fi certified are the Cisco Wireless-N Internet Home Monitoring camera; the Edimax IC-3030 and Edimax IC-7010PTn; and PCI's CS-WMV04N, CS-W05NM and CS-W05N units.

WiMAX may be a bit longer coming to the market and will have a tough row to hoe in the video segment. Vittore noted the huge capacity demands of video. "Video sucks up so much bandwidth," he added.

Yet, Shakouri acknowledged the challenge. "We need to handle higher data rates and leverage multiple technologies," he said. He noted the demand from utility companies seeking to safeguard and monitor the Smart Grid and for public safety departments to be able to obtain and secure their security data. It is not good if the bad guys can listen in on transmissions. The WiMAX Forum concentrated first on security of the transmissions. When WiMAX-3 comes out, Shakouri said, it will likely provide gigabit coverage. "100 MB will not be enough," he said. "And I'm 100 percent sure we will see wider channels--in the 100 MHz range."

The big advantage of WiMAX is the distances it covers. WiMAX can provide broadband wireless access up to 30 miles for fixed stations and three to 10 miles for mobile stations. That is incrementally better than Wi-Fi's wireless local area network standard which stretches only to 300 feet. With WiMAX, the issue of interference is lessened since it offers bandwidth in the licensed spectrum.

With WiMAX-2, the technology can provide higher system capacity with a peak rate of 300 Mbps and lower latency. Under WiMAX-2, the 802.16m standard will meet the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) requirements for 4G or "IMT-Advanced."

Companies like Alvarion, Beceem, GCT Semiconductor, Intel, Motorola, Samsung, Sequans, XRONet and ZTE as well as the Taiwanese Research Organization, Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), worked with the WiMAX Forum to accelerate the implementation of interoperable system profiles for WiMAX-2.

With 802.16m approved as a standard, Shakouri expects companies to roll out product at the end of this year or early in 2012. "Timing depends on the vendors," he said.

North American companies have been slow to embrace WiMAX, however. The standard enjoys much higher adoption rates in Asia, Europe and Africa than it does in the United States or Canada.

The newer iterations of WiMAX may answer that challenge. Whether for home security or monitoring campus or area-wide video surveillance, Shakouri maintains that video is one of the areas where WiMAX offers significant advantages. It has reach, security and bandwidth, he said. But, he added, the ultimate solution will involve multiple technologies.

"At the end of the day, Wi-Fi or ZigBee will act in the local area and WiMAX will provide the wide-area coverage. The key is integrating multiple technologies that will give an end-to-end solution."

PeopleDeals Offers Social Coupons that Grow in Value When Shared.

PeopleString Corporation (OTCBB: PLPE) announced the official launch of PeopleDeals, a social coupon platform that allows merchants to launch real-time social media marketing campaigns and, through its shareItUp feature, offer deals that grow in value as they are shared via social networks, email or text. The platform leverages the power of social media, mobile applications and email, allowing merchants to connect directly with their target consumers and create customized deals that best fit their unique business needs. To help drive online distribution, PeopleDeals has partnered with toolbar and app marketing company, ALOT.com, a division of Vertro, Inc. (NASDAQ: VTRO). Under the terms of the agreement, ALOT.com will feature a specially designed PeopleDeals app on its site and promote the app to its millions of users.

PeopleDeals' proprietary shareItUp feature incentivizes customer loyalty by increasing the value of deals as they are shared. PeopleDeals exists as a stand-alone web portal and Facebook application, with mobile applications on both the iPhone and Android operating systems launching in the coming weeks. The platform incorporates multiple layers of geolocation technology to ensure that consumers receive only the most relevant deals and to prevent fraud. Users who share a discount via PeopleDeals' shareItUp button increase the value of their coupon for themselves as well as every other user who did so before them. Currently, users can share deals through Facebook, Twitter, PeopleString, MySpace, Blogger, TypePad, LiveJournal, Delicious, SMS or email.

"PeopleDeals drives long-term customer relationships by rewarding loyalty with increasing discounts, rather than one shot deals," said Darin Myman, PeopleString's President and CEO. "PeopleDeals offers merchants something Groupon and its clones - which often attract one-time bargain shoppers - do not: a fully customizable coupon platform, direct connection with their customers, and most importantly, a growing, loyal customer base that will advocate on their behalf."

Unlike other digital coupon services, which offer businesses few options in crafting their discount, PeopleDeals allows merchants to tailor nearly every facet of their deal to meet their own needs and view a deal's progress in real time. Business owners can decide beforehand at what price or redemption level they want to cap the offer to ensure profitability. Merchants also have the option of offering several deals at once for no additional charge.

"PeopleDeals makes more expensive marketing channels unnecessary and passes those savings along to the consumer in the form of better deals and bigger discounts," said Myman. "The cost of traditional marketing is an enormous burden on merchants and particularly small businesses. PeopleDeals provides unlimited marketing potential and the ability to connect directly with a loyal customer base for a third of what a business owner might spend on a single Valpak advertisement or a costly Groupon."

Unlike similar services that take a commission of up to 50 percent of a merchant's sales, PeopleDeals charges a flat fee. PeopleDeals offers a free two week trial and is available to businesses for $80 per month or $649 annually. The service is completely free of charge for consumers.

Online police unit saves 278 children from paedophiles.

The Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop) said it safeguarded 278 youngsters over the past 12 months.

The number was double those helped in the previous period by the unit and the most in one year since it was established in 2006.
Of the children, 47 were identified and found as a result of analysis of images and videos posted online by paedophiles.

Meanwhile 417 suspected child sex offenders were arrested for offences from possessing indecent images to rape.

Jim Gamble, who leads Ceop, said the unit also disrupted the activities of 96 networks sharing images of child abuse.

He said: "Ceop brings together cross-sector expertise and then delivers bespoke frontline services to a whole network of practitioners.

"That is real economy of scale and our results year on year show the
very lasting and significant impact we are making."

Home Office crime prevention minister James Brokenshire said: "The Government is committed to protecting children and Ceop plays a vital role which means more children are safeguarded, more offenders are apprehended and more professionals are trained."

The unit's annual review said work continued to build a virtual warehouse housing every child abuse image collected by Ceop.

It is linked to international police databases and helps reduce
duplication by investigators.

The report said long-term undercover inquiries into several international online paedophile networks were coming to a conclusion.

Ceop has enjoyed success tracking wanted offenders, with 16 out of the 20 individuals publicised traced over the past four years.

It has also set up a network of more than 46,000 volunteers to give internet safety lessons.

Ceop has seen some success in introducing a "panic button" for websites, despite a public spat with online giant Facebook.

Investigators received more than 6,200 reports of suspicious activity online through the button, including grooming and fraud.

Iran feels the tweet.

[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]

Iran's hardline authorities are attempting to suppress news coverage of the country's hotly disputed presidential election, but they can't quash the Twitter brigades.

Foreign media outlets have found themselves coming under attack as they attempt to report on protests ever since the official announcement that President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had won a resounding victory in Friday's poll. But Iran's youthful and Web-savvy population has proven adept at using Twitter, blogs, mobile phones and social networks to spread the word about the post-election discord.

The main opposition candidate, Mir Hussein Moussavi, has claimed that the election result, which saw Ahmadinejad garner a surprisingly high 62% of the vote, has been mired by widespread fraud and vote-rigging.

All the major international networks have filled their coverage with frequently astounding footage of the protests, demonstrations and scuffles between government and opposition forces. Much of that footage has been shot on mobile phones and allowed Iranians to get their message out even when more traditional methods of communication have been shut off.

"We're managing to keep the show going largely thanks to this user-generated content from people in Iran calling us, sending video footage and photos," said Sina Motalebi, editor of BBC Persian TV Interactive. "The amazing thing has been that even with all the obstacles, the volume of footage we have been receiving has actually been increasing in recent days."

Foreign reporters in the country are finding the normally calm streets of Tehran resembling something more akin to a battleground as the Iranian government wheels out tough measures to stifle coverage of opposition protesters.

Journos for Italian pubcaster RAI and news agency Reuters were reportedly beaten by riot police in the capital. A CNN producer was hit by a police baton, BBC journo John Simpson was briefly arrested after filming some of the protests and a Sky News team reputedly had a gun pointed in its direction.

Arab newscaster Al-Arabiya had its Tehran offices closed down Sunday afternoon with no explanation from Iranian officials.

"We're worried about being banned from the chance to cover an important country like Iran during an important event like the election and its aftermath without explaining the reason behind that decision," said Nabil Khatib, Al-Arabiya's executive news director.

Reporters from Spain's pubcaster RTVE complained that they had also been asked to leave the country by the Iranian government after filming protests.

Press freedom org Reporters Without Borders has claimed that a number of Iranian journalists have been arrested, while the offices of Moussavi's newspaper have been ransacked and had its computers destroyed by Ahmadinejad supporters.

The intimidation hasn't just been physical.

BBC Persian TV's signal into Iran has been electronically jammed. Access to the news org's popular Farsi-language website and the U.S. government-funded Voice of America have also been partially blocked.

Another major issue for Western media outlets has been the difficulty of communicating with their Iran-based reporters.

Mobile phone lines are not connecting in large parts of the country, hitting calls and text messages, while the Internet has been uncommonly slow.

Some have accused the government of deliberately degrading the phone lines to prevent opposition supporters and journalists from communicating with each other and the outside world, while some commentators have blamed the slow connections on massive demand.

"We're getting through about once every 100 calls and even then we have to patch the calls through the U.S.," said Chris Birkett, Sky News' executive editor. "It makes it very difficult to know what's going on in the streets, which is why we're using social networking sites like Twitter. We got 30,000 hits on our site just on Monday. It's been very handy."

The use of Twitter, blogs and other user-generated content has proved hugely important in bypassing the government's attempted crackdown. Internet usage is very popular in Iran, with its large youthful population. The country was recently estimated to have more than 100,000 blogs.

In the U.S., CNN took a drubbing from Twitter users, bloggers and other media critics, who charged that the network didn't devote enough airtime to the protests over the weekend. The volume was so strong that it sparked the creation of the Twitter hashtag, or subject listing, "#CNNfail."

DELL TO PROVIDE INDONESIAN NET SHOPS WITH SPECIALLY-PRICED PCS.

JAKARTA, Aug 31 Asia Pulse - The Indonesian Internet Service Shops Association (Awari) is to cooperate with Dell Indonesia in implementing a nationwide personal computer procurement program, a spokesman said.

"We are happy with the cooperation agreement as more than 300 internet service shops grouped in Awari will thereby have a chance to buy Dell PCs at special prices," Awari chairman Irwin Day said after signing the agreement with Dell Indonesia's country manager, Megawaty Khie, here Thursday.

Through the program, Dell Indonesia would provide Awari members with PCs which already have computer application programs, including Microsoft Windows.

Internet service shops, locally known as "warnets", always replace their PCs with new ones once every three or four years.

Every shop needs Rp9 million to Rp10 million to replace every PC with a new one, Irwin said.

Meanwhile, Megawati said the cooperation would hopefully narrow the gap in digital business industry and also help develop the small- and medium-scale enterprise sector in Indonesia.

She, however, was reluctant to name the investment value and the PC prices.

Internet kiosk plans shelved.(British Telecommunications PLC drops plans to set up Internet kiosks)(Brief Article)

BT has dropped plans to set up a network of 28,000 public internet terminals, after trials of the so-called internet kiosks proved to be a flop.

The idea was to provide easy access to the internet and allow people to send and receive emails and text messages, and make telephone calls. But a lack of interest meant only 1,300 of the kiosks were set up around the country.

BT refused to speculate on why the kiosks were so unpopular but conceded that they had faced competition from other Wi-Fi services.

It said Britons were increasingly opting for mobile devices of their own when it came to making telephone calls or surfing the web. Although no new terminals will be set up, those already in place will remain, although BT said some might be moved to locations with higher revenue potential.

Court Dismisses Amended Class Action Lawsuits by BCI Common Shareholders.

BCE Inc. (NYSE/TSX: BCE) today announced that each of the $1 billion lawsuits filed respectively by two common shareholders of Bell Canada International Inc. ("BCI"), against BCE and BCI have been dismissed by the Ontario Superior Court of Justice (the "Court"). The Court dismissed both lawsuits on the grounds that the actions abused the process of the Court and disclosed no reasonable cause of action against BCE or BCI, and ordered that neither plaintiff may amend his statement of claim to again bring these suits before the Court. The Court's decision is subject to appeal by the plaintiffs to the Ontario Court of Appeal.

The first action, brought by Mr. Wilfred Shaw, was originally filed on September 27, 2002, and sought court approval to proceed by way of class action on behalf of all persons who owned BCI common shares on December 3, 2001 in connection with the issuance of BCI common shares on February 15, 2002 pursuant to BCI's Recapitalization Plan and the implementation of BCI's Plan of Arrangement approved by the Court on July 17, 2002. After the original Shaw action was dismissed by the Court on May 9, 2003, Mr. Shaw filed an amended statement of claim on June 27, 2003, and on August 30, 2003, the second action, brought by Mr. Cameron Gillespie was filed. The Gillespie lawsuit was substantially identical to the Shaw amended statement of claim except with respect to the name of the plaintiff. It is these two actions which were dismissed by the Court's order issued yesterday.

TALK BACK TO THE MEDIA.(Commentary/Editorial)

Election coverage very poor this year

The Rocky Mountain News election coverage on Nov. 3 was probably the poorest coverage in the history of the paper, both in terms of format, presentation of the facts and bias.

Most important, why was the "red-blue" national map and the state-by-state scorecard buried on Page 47A? This should have been either on the paper's front page or on the first inside page. The national roundup on 44A and 45A for some reason was devoid of much actual post-election data.

Now, as far as the first few pages, the News successfully buried all the truly pertinent facts on the presidential race and U.S. Senate and House races in its futile attempt to cast the election as another Florida:

* The vote count for Ohio was nowhere to be found (besides the 47A table).

* The popular vote tally was nowhere to be found (again, aside from the 47A table).

* The fact that Bush garnered more votes numerically than any presidential candidate in history and more than 50 percent of the popular vote for the first time in many years was obscured.

The issue here is the contrast between coverage in every past election in recent memory (which has been very good) and this year's exceptionally poor coverage.

News ill-treats local Marine's sacrifice

I was saddened to read about the death of a local teenager in Iraq, and particularly dismayed that the News gave this story such insignificant coverage ("Northglenn Marine, 19, killed in action in Iraq," Nov. 2).

I had a son serve in Iraq for a year, and was fortunate to have him return safely. If he had been killed, I wouldn't want to see the coverage of his death sandwiched between a story about a gruesome murder and one about an assault, tucked away where it was hardly noticeable.

I find it particularly disturbing that the News didn't consider his life story worthy enough to provide some depth by sending a News writer to report on it. Could it be because his untimely death occurred right before the election and might not reflect positively on the president?

Shame on the News. His family and friends deserve so much more.

Media column slips

I am extremely disappointed to see the News' weekly On The Media column degenerate from what was originally a thoughtful, nonpartisan critique of factual errors and outright bias exhibited by the local media into nothing more than a highly biased caricature of itself.

Authored by left-of-Michael Moore-liberal journalism professor Michael Tracey, the latest column ("Truth matters not to Bush backers," Oct. 30) is nothing more than blatant Bush-bashing, while at the same time implying that Bush supporters are self-delusional.

Tracey has no business writing a column that purports to provide balance to media inaccuracies and distortions; perhaps when he writes it, the On the Media column could be retitled On the (Far) Left.

I could even suggest a motto: "We distort, you decide."

A repugnant smirk

What was the News' objective in placing a particularly repugnant photograph of a smirking George Bush accepting victory on the front page of its Nov. 4 issue (" 'America has spoken' ")?

To make the 52 million-plus people who voted against the "Great Divider" even more angry and more frustrated?

Or was it the News' way of saying, "Good morning, America! Welcome to four more years of Iraq, four more years of countless additional deaths, four more years of record deficits, and four more years of lies about everything from WMD to Halliburton"?

Or perhaps, the likeness of the sneering Bush was really saying, "Good morning, America! Looks like Karl, Dick, and the rest of us righteous churchgoers got you suckers again."

Whoever chose the picture of our president for the front page of the Nov. 4 News (" 'America has spoken' ") reflects the mindset of the mainstream media.

We aren't dummies. We understand the News' subtleties.

We know when the paper leaves something out of a news story or, worse, doesn't print it at all. That is precisely why newspapers are losing readership and television network news is losing viewers.

The mainstream media will not realize their folly until it is too late. Take a look at some of the blogs. We Internet surfers find lots of information there. And it isn't tinfoil-hat stuff; it's hard news with no spin or interpretation.

Go back to Who, What, When, Where, Why and How. No more "journalistic narrative"! Be a newspaper we can read and trust.

Shame on the News for its Nov. 4 front-page picture of our re-elected president (" 'America has spoken' ").

John Kerry himself could not have chosen a more unflattering, atypical one.

MasterCard can block casino debts.

May 12, 2003 (The Australian - ABIX via COMTEX)

The MasterCard company has indicated that it is willing and able to block illegal online gambling. In May 2003, MasterCard made a submission to the Australian Department of Communications. This Department is reviewing Australia's Internet gambling laws, which make it illegal for an Australian to bet at an online casino. The MasterCard submission indicates that it is possible for MasterCard to "identify and deny" authorisation for Internet gambling transactions. The online providers who do not follow the rules will not be authorised to accept MasterCard cards. The Australian Bankers' Association made a submission saying that banks should not act as enforcement agencies.
